What is Dry Macular Degeneration?
Dry macular degeneration is caused by the slow breakdown of light-sensitive cells in the retina, leading to the deterioration of the macula. Over time, drusen—small yellow or white deposits made of cellular debris—accumulate under the retina. These deposits disrupt retinal function and interfere with the retina’s ability to process light effectively. As a result, the central vision, which is needed for activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces, becomes blurry or distorted.
The Role of Drusen in Dry AMD
Drusen are a hallmark feature of dry AMD. These deposits build up between the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the retina, damaging retinal cells in the process. As the buildup of drusen worsens, the retina’s ability to clear waste diminishes, leading to further damage to retinal cells and progressive vision loss. The central vision of patients with dry AMD can become severely impaired, impacting their day-to-day lives.
Current Treatment Options for Dry AMD
Currently, there is no cure for dry macular degeneration, and existing treatments primarily focus on slowing the progression of the disease and managing symptoms. Nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes may help, but they do not directly address the underlying causes of vision loss. There is, however, hope on the horizon for patients with early and moderate-stage dry AMD.
