The Lumithera Valeda treatment uses photobiomodulation therapy to deliver low-level light to the retina, which stimulates mitochondrial activity in retinal cells. This process helps to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, two major contributors to the progression of dry macular degeneration. Additionally, the light therapy encourages cellular repair and regeneration, improving retinal function and slowing disease progression.
Each treatment cycle involves 9 visits per eye, typically spaced over several weeks. Most patients will undergo multiple treatment cycles, each consisting of 9 visits, to maximize the therapeutic effects. These sessions are quick, non-invasive, and pain-free, allowing patients to return to their normal daily activities immediately after each visit.
Before starting treatment, we conduct a thorough evaluation, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans, to assess the health of the retina and identify any drusen—yellowish deposits that accumulate under the retina and are common in dry macular degeneration. These scans provide valuable information that helps us monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. After completing the cycles, follow-up OCT scans will be done to evaluate any improvements in retinal health, including a reduction in drusen and improvements in vision.
