Stereopsis is the way our eyes and brain work together to help us see depth. Each of our eyes sees the world from a slightly different angle because our eyes are a few inches apart. When you look at something, your brain takes the two slightly different pictures from each eye and combines them into one 3D image. This is why we can tell how far away things are. Without stereopsis, everything would look flat, like a picture.

When your eyes focus on something, like a tree or a computer screen, all the other objects at the same distance form something called the horopter. The horopter is an invisible curve that shows where your eyes see things in perfect alignment. If something is on the horopter, it will look clear and single. But if something is closer or farther than the horopter, it might look blurry or double because the images from each eye do not match perfectly.

Your brain is very good at handling small differences in what each eye sees. These differences, called disparities, help you figure out depth. That’s why you can catch a ball, drive a car, or even walk without bumping into things. Your brain quickly figures out how far away objects are using these small differences.

Sometimes, the brain struggles to combine the images from each eye. One rare problem is called horror fusionis. This happens when the brain is afraid or refuses to fuse the two images into one. Instead of seeing a normal, single picture, the person may see a sliding, shaky, or jumping image that they cannot get to settle down. It is very uncomfortable and hard to fix. It’s like the brain is stuck, and it can’t make the two images work together, even when the eyes are trying. People with horror fusionis might see double vision that seems to wiggle or move no matter how hard they try to make it stop.

Horror fusionis often happens in people who have had long-term eye alignment problems, like strabismus (crossed eyes). Sometimes, even after surgery to straighten the eyes, the brain still refuses to combine the images because it has gotten used to not working with both eyes at the same time. The brain may protect itself by not fusing the images, and this creates the horror fusionis effect.

Stereopsis is important for everyday life. It helps you know how far away a glass of water is when you reach for it. It helps you judge distance when you are playing sports or driving. People who do not develop good stereopsis, like those with a lazy eye or eye turn, may not see depth well. They might rely on other clues, like size or shadows, to figure out distance.
